Review

Wanda Jackson is often cited as the first female rocker, and since Elvis himself encouraged her to start playing rockabilly, the claim just might be right. Certainly, on wild covers of "Let's Have A Party" and "Riot In Cell Block #9," she rocks with as much rebellious verve as fellow cats Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran. She was always a country singer too, though, and Rockin' in the Country shows off both sides of Wanda, concluding with the Patsy-Cline-plus-twang sound of her finest recordings, "Why I'm Walkin'," "Right Or Wrong" and "In The Middle Of A Heartache," each of them classic country hits. --David Cantwell
