Review

In the beginning there was the voice. And it was good. This anthology of great singers plucked from Peter Gabriel's Real World label demonstrates that it really is a large world after all--one in which overtone-rich, didgeridoo-like Tuvan throat singing can coexist with Indipop chanteuse Sheila Chandra's dexterous vocal percussion. Real World's reputation for sumptuous production is secured by tracks on which the vocals are almost secondary to the effects and beats (e.g., the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Gabriel and Bengal's Paban Das Baul with Sam Mills). Plenty of unadulterated vocal grain, however, may be found in the differing ensemble styles of the Martenitsa Choir (Balkan music from Australia!), Moscow's Dmitry Pokrovsky Ensemble, and Georgia's Tsinandali Choir. Africa both old (Tanzania's Hukwe Zawose, Kenya's Ayub Ogada) and new (Tanzania's Remmy Ongala, the Congo's Papa Wemba) sounds less foreign than the haunting Norwegian fusion of joik singer Mari Boine.
