The San Francisco-based label Six Degrees has become a hub in the ecstatic realm of loungy dance music. It focuses, to a great extent, on an urban-tropical hybrid that rings true for anyone who's shaken off beach sand, crossed a well-paved esplanade, and found themselves in a civilized nightclub. Motion celebrates such "fourth world" party music right from the start with Bebel Gilberto's intoxicating "Sem Contencao"--the beats as persistent as a patient suitor, Gilberto's vocals seductive enough to excuse her for once helping Kenny G cover her parents' classic, "The Girl from Ipanema." "Ipanema," of course, is the über-single for endless-summer lovin'. There's little here with that song's potent insouciance, but the heady mix of synthesized languor and techno-fied desire that is Monisa Ramos's psychedelic "Ocean" and Euphoria's heavenly "Delirium" make for excellent after-hours music any time of the day. --Marc WeidenbaumMotion is the first release in a new Six Degrees series that gathers rare remixed versions of some of our favorite tracks and presents them in one complete collection.
