Review

Named after the famous cigar brand, Hecho En Cuba is another collection of songs sung by the leading members of Buena Vista Social Club. The twist is that some of these tunes are actually the classic versions that originally made the players famous in Cuba, while other songs have never been released. Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa, and Omara Portuando each sing two or three songs backed by various lineups. Pianist Ruben Gonzalez displays his jazzy flourishes on two of his own. There are only a couple of songs that overlap with the original BVSC album ("Chan Chan," "Ay Candela," and "El Cuarto De Tula"), but they are more traditionally Latin than the acoustic-guitar-and-African drums hybrid that BVSC producer Ry Cooder used. The sound isn't quite as crisp, and there are more effects on some of the vocals here than non-Cuban fans may be used to, but these are minor quibbles. Highlights include Ruben Gonzalez's sentimental "Como Siento Yo" and Ibrahim Ferrer's infectiously upbeat "Nuestra Ruca." --Tad Hendrickson
