Review

This compilation of ambient dub is brimming with reggae-induced rhythms, samples, and the occasional melody. Paying homage to dub's origins in Jamaica and the man who made them, Osbourne Ruddock (or "King Tubby"), this group of dubmasters manipulate the sounds of reggae into a fresh, sometimes danceable and sometimes just tripy, but always satisfying electronic compilation. Ras Command creates an echoing, thumping love dance with "Love Dub," mixing in flanged drums, vocal echoes, reverbed electric piano, and flute-synthesizer. Other standouts include P.R.O.M.'s "Hypnotized," which with its leisurely rhythm, sensuous and breathy incantation, crisp percussion, and moody organ melody will surely do just that. "Unbelievers" is notable for its laid-back, traditional reggae swing and cavernous percussive whipping. Throughout the set, dark plump bass, subterranean keys of staccato, and an icy percussion swirl together, creating a blend of choice mixes that make for a refreshing slurp of thick and creamy Earthjuice. --Karen Karleski
