Review

The justification for commercial country-pop is albums like this one. Ty Herndon never transcends the narrow soap-opera concerns of mainstream Nashville, but he has a great honky-tonk voice, full of throaty purrs and hard-bitten personality, and he has a sure ear for catchy melodies. Singing Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," Hank Cochran's "Summer Was a Bummer," Vince Gill's "You Just Get One," and seven other numbers, Herndon milks the hooks of all their pleasures and lends the familiar romantic scenarios a real conviction. --Geoffrey Himes
