Review

Since Toshi Kubota's a Japanese dude with dreads and a Superfly-style falsetto, it'd be awfully easy to write him off as a can't-we-all-just-get-along novelty act--if it weren't for the fact that the guy's so funky you'd swear he just stepped off George Clinton's mothership. Kubota's second English language release finds the singer-songwriter in a passionate embrace with the foundations of funk, and features appearances by R&B and hip-hop heavyweights such as Roots rimshot master Ahmir Thompson, chanteuse Angie Stone, rapper Pras, and Lucy Pearl's Raphael Saadiq. The title track--with its sly, sexy bassline and playfully sardonic lyrics ("I'm not your chardonnay / I'm not your sushi bar / I'm nothing but your love")--serves as a quirky homage to Curtis Mayfield's classic "Pusherman", while the hip-hop-infused "Never Turn Back" is pure, soulful bliss, a song so upliftingly joyful that you'll be booty-shakin' on Cloud Nine. --Sylvia W.
