Review

Tony Furtado keeps pulling new rabbits out of his hat. A former Grand National banjo champion, he's ventured deeper into his eclectic bluegrass-rock-blues fusion and mastered the slide guitar as well. On These Chains, Furtado has pushed his singing and songwriting to the fore, offering a batch of impressive originals penned with collaborators like Jim Lauderdale, Al Anderson, and Jules Shear. Furtado's youthful, contemporary-sounding tenor works as effectively on a biting blues-rock lament like the title tune as it does on a gentle pop ballad like "Standing in the Rain" or his folky duet (with Shear) on Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings." Of course, a Furtado disc wouldn't be complete without a sizzling, slide-driven blues instrumental; this time around, it's the exquisite "Doc's Bog." --Bob AllenFurtado has gained respect through his impressive guitar playing and world-class banjo playing. He incorporates a deep understanding of traditional music with modern day music, creating a distinctive sound. Tony has been compared to Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews, and a modern Ry Cooder. "These Chains", which follows two previous releases, promises to expose him to an even wider audience
