Review

You really can't have a supergroup without superstars, but the Yayhoos are pretty close to the real thing--at least in the roots-rock world, where guitarists Dan Baird and Eric "Roscoe" Ambel are noted heavyweights. Baird, the former Georgia Satellites frontman, takes the lead vocal on half a dozen tracks, including "Oh! Chicago," which previously appeared on the Bloodshot Records fifth anniversary compilation Down to the Promised Land. A veteran of Roscoe's Gang and the producer of albums by Blue Mountain, the Bottle Rockets, and others, Ambel sings two tunes on Fear Not the Obvious and had a hand in penning one of the disc's highlights, the brawny rocker "What Are We Waiting For." But the greatest contribution from Ambel, a sought-after sideman on the six-string, is the avalanche of greasy guitar he unleashes throughout. To hear the Yayhoos tell it, music history starts with the Stones and ends with Skynyrd, and in this case that's a fine excuse for a party. --Anders Smith-Lindall These guys bring it on. Some folks may not like the loud guitars and swaggering attitudes but that's their loss. I swear I haven't rocked this hard since "Street Survivors." Even though "Fear Not the Obvious" doesn't have dueling guitar solos, the rocking songs more than make up for it. That song where they tear Hank Jr. a new one is pretty good too.
