Review

Beneath the slick production and saccharine songwriting that dominate Nothing But Love lies the unmistakable talent of two gifted siblings, who imbue even the most insipid material with sincerity. Sixteen-year-old Amanda sweetly nails the tear-jerking mother-and-daughter ballad "26 Cents" and wrings real emotion out of the corny forbidden-love saga of "Williamstown," although she's poorly served by the forced twang of "Back on My Feet." Younger brother Tyler, a mere 14, adeptly delivers the countrified puppy love of "Don't I Have a Heart" and the vaguely `80s-sounding reverb-filled rocker "Then There's You." Father Steve rounds out the trio, chipping in on the ubiquitous, tightly meshed harmonies and co-writing (with help from Music City pros) most of this debut's 11 songs. If the Wilkinson kids escape the Nashville studio knob-twirlers and put their limber voices in the hands of more-sophisticated songwriters, their next CD could be as remarkable as this one is bland. --Carolyn Wennblom
