Review

"Leisure War"… is the Verbrilli Sound's second full CD release. The previous album, the richly textured "Many Coloured Butterflies", was released on Seattle's Sweet Mother Records in 2000. It received excellent reviews from XLR8R and Mixer magazine, and tracks from the album found their way into the hands, heads and DJ sets of Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, and DJ Krush, amongst others. "Views" was licensed for the Wallpaper Mach 1.5 compilation alongside songs by Thievery Corporation, Air, and Jazzanova.

Leisure War… as an idea, actually refers to two separate battles that take place typically in the context of urban living. The first battle is that waged by corporations, churches, organizations, politicians, individuals of power, all vying for a slice or more of our free time. These forces make a living by profiting from our leisure decisions- that is, how we choose to spend our time, and our money. The second battle is an individual one, and it is our own fight for free time in a world that seems to want to take so much of it from us. I'm guessing these two wars have gone on for a long time, and probably won't end anytime soon. I suppose this album of mine, which doesn't try in any concise way to present or study these ideas, is really just my own little weapon to wield in times of war. It's a piece of work created in my leisure time, designed perhaps to take your ears hostage for awhile- maybe take a bit of your money too if I'm lucky.
