Review

The Sabri Brothers are huge stars in Pakistan, having been part of the Sufi music scene there longer than any other popular artists. They have made forays into the international limelight a few times in the past few decades, bringing both the deep devotion and energy of the music and often a few surprises (like the guitars, something that shocked purists audiences in the '70s!). They are never wildly experimental like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan often was, but they nevertheless do push the boundaries of tradition, presenting four long tracks that incorporate bass and saxophone into the basic qawwal formula of ecstatic voices, percussion, and harmonium (a small pump organ that sits on the floor in front of the seated player). The Sabris are masters of the art, and this record continues their saga with respect and enthusiasm. --Louis Gibson
