Review

Back in the 1960s, most Jamaicans picked up airwaves from New Orleans and Miami more clearly than from their capital city, Kingston. Rock steadily developed from the blend they heard every day--Jamaican music, like mento and ska, with the sounds of America's R&B pioneers. Sea of Love is one of the finest examples of that enticing pre-reggae style. Lead vocalist Leroy Sibbles and harmonizers Barry Llewelyn and Earl Morgan are ridiculously young and sing like angels on every cut; guitar legend Ernie Ranglin contributes succulent six-string rhythms, and the title track has to be the most blissful version of "Sea of Love" on the planet. Today's producers still dip into this set, produced by Coxsonne Dodd at his fabled Studio One, to build new hits. --Elena Oumano
