Review

The Figgs have always seemed like a band born at the wrong time. They've got the punky-pop (or is the poppy-punk?) thing down cold, and they cop their licks from some great bands--the Kinks, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker (with whom they've toured as backup band), even Kiss. Banda Macho finds them at their best, with guitarist Mike Genty and bassist Pete Donnelly churning out songs that make the kids bounce and the adults turn up the car stereo. The surprising thing about this album is the emergence of guitarist Guy Lyons as an additional songwriter, with one of the album's best songs, "Bad Luck Sammy," to his credit. --Randy Silver
