Review

For those interested in a vital document of the folk revival, or for bluegrass fans looking for another lost classic, On the Road (and More) delivers the goods and then some. The Country Gentlemen's third Folkways Records album, On the Road originally included recordings from two separate concerts from 1962 and 1963, and has now been augmented by six unreleased cuts captured at a 1961 Carnegie Hall hootenanny. This is bluegrass music at its most adventurous. The Gentlemen favored a spirited, diverse, and outlandish presentation, featuring a wide range of material from traditional folk to bluegrass classics to novelty songs like "Ain't Got No Home," which is included here. When On the Road was released in 1963, the urban folk boom was peaking, and the Country Gentlemen was one of the bands that was leading the way. The vibrant music heard on this welcome collection shows why. --Mike JohnsonUniversally acclaimed as one of the most important progressive bluegrass bands, The Country Gentlemen brilliantly encompass a unique blend of folk and bluegrass. Originally released in 1963 by Folkways Records at the height of folk and bluegrass music's popularity, On The Road is an essential example of the Country Gentlemen's definitive style. This album is comprised of excerpts from two live concerts recorded in 1962-63 and six never before released bonus tracks recorded in 1961 at the band's appearance at Carnegie Hall. This reissue offers a rare glimpse of the Country Gentlemen as they appeared on stage at the peak of their creativity. 61 minutes, 32-page booklet, extensive notes
