If you have one of those only-at-the-holidays get-togethers that unites crusty old grandparents with tie-dyed hippie types, finding mutually agreeable listening might be tough--but this lovably loopy disc is a start. Made up of first-wave hippie luminaries from outfits such as Country Joe & the Fish, Commander Cody's Lost Planet Airmen and Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, the Christmas Jug Band cooks up a giddy concoction of lightly tweaked traditional carols, chuckle-inducing parodies (like "Mr. Sandman" taking a seasonal turn as "Mr. Santa"), and sometimes silly, sometimes melancholy originals ("If I Don't Have a Chimney" is a real killer). With their motley assortment of accordions, fiddles, and--of course--jugs, the Christmas Jug Band makes the holidays an old-fashioned good time for all. --David Sprague
