Review
On their second outing, the Birthday Party completely forgoes traditional song structure in favor of noisy and confrontational deconstruction of pop and rock forms. Prayers on Fire sounds like an exorcism gone horribly wrong with leader Nick Cave's demons clawing their way out of his soul and having the run of the place. Simple compositions, fleshed out with feedback, distortion, and random horn blasts, frame these horrific tales of degradation, twisted sex, and murder. "Figure of Fun" is anything but--a violent, howling rant with cheesy organ fills. "King Ink" is a lumbering beast accented by Cave's unrelentingly demented freeform growl.
