Review

Part of what makes country Christmas collections so great is the passion and devotion with which the artists present the material. If you need any more convincing that Tammy Wynette is a true believer, check out "Let's Put Christ Back in Christmas." It might be a bit much for some, but for others it will be the reason why this becomes one of their favorite holiday releases. Wynette's faith isn't the only thing that makes her version of these standards classics: There's something familiar and homey about the warmth her vibrato lends to "Silent Night" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem"--not to mention that crisp distinction in her delivery. "Away in a Manger" is particularly lovely, as is "It Came upon a Midnight Clear." "Blue Christmas" and "One Happy Christmas" best showcase her Nashville roots. While not as heavy on the "trashy" side that she was known for, it's still a great collection for fans and a great place for beginners to start. --Steve Gdula
