Review

The Raleigh quintet, Strange, is an outfit that calls to mind the darkest elements of psychedelic rock: densely layered guitars, eclectic instrumentation, and an element of fore-boding only achieved by a passion for minor chords. Out of the darkness, though, emerges a work of brilliance, evidenced by Strange’s debut album for Pidgeon English Records - “Things In Night”. Its overtones of anxiety are complemented by a musical boldness, a desire for a meticulous sound. And yet through this darkness, there is a recognizable aspect to Strange. They take the pedestrian and reinterpret it like the musical equivalent to a Tim Burton visit to grandmother’s house. The spirit is there to be recognized, but there have been significant alterations to it. The result is a haunting, vivid passage through familiar themes of desire and loathing, as well as self-exploration.
