Review

Her given name is Emma Louise, but when Ms. Niblett dons her blonde wig and steps into the recording booth--or onto the stage--she becomes Scout. On Kidnapped by Neptune, the Nottingham native combines the single-minded intensity of Cat Power with the spirited sweetness of the Breeders. The end result is raw, ragged, exposed. As with 2003's I Am, her third full-length was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini, who's worked with kindred spirits like PJ Harvey and Nina Nastasia. So what sets Scout apart from these other singer/songwriters? Well, there's a greater emphasis on the beat (and she often bangs the kick drum herself). Then there's the way she can turn on a dime from a whisper to a scream ("Lullaby for Scout in 10 Years") or split in two through the magic of double-tracking ("F**ck Treasure Island").
