Review

After dabbling in the digital wizardry of drum loops and dissonant keyboards on 2002's Cobblestone Runway, Sexsmith returns with an elegiac yet hopeful piano-and-strings pop record that's somehow akin to the organic feel and execution of his earliest work, while also richer in texture and scope. His gift for melody remains inexhaustible and his lyrics tap into the soul-sustaining intimacy of relationships--even in the face of the most dire moods. "They're in the business of panic and control," he sings on the subversively optimistic "From Now On," "we're in the business of the heart, and of the soul." It's a paradoxical endeavor--for Sexsmith, joy and sorrow are always fused in the truest feelings--but never merely sentimental. Even without their stirring arrangements, these empathic, plainspoken songs would qualify as soul music in the deepest sense. --Roy Kasten
