Review

“Gather Honey” contains previously unreleased tracks (both live and studio recordings) culled from 1963 through 1978 and features the first known recording of Penny made when she was 21 years old, performing a Leadbelly tune. Many of Penny's songs on this album are by Canadian songwriters active during the coffeehouse era of the 1960s including Chris Rawlings, Ronney Abramson and Bruce Murdoch. In fact, the extensive liner notes (compiled by Gary Cristall) are a history of the folk scene in Montréal at the time. Other songs are by Americans such as Chris Kearney, Tom Campbell and Patrick Sky, who had some Canadian connections. And three notable tunes were penned by strong women —Bonnie Raitt, Buffy Ste-Marie and Janis Ian— who had already made their mark in the folk world. `Start Again', by Canadian Paul Lauzon, is an apt anthem for our times; and `This is All There Is' by Bill Horan & Peter Pagé poses the eternal question. It's also the song that got the whole project started. Add a traditional trio of tunes (blues, country, and Celtic) plus two of Penny's early originals and the picture is complete.
