Review
Widely regarded as one of the more important Swiss composers in history, the legacy of Othmar Schoeck's music lives on in recordings like the Classic PICK/JPMC Records release of his collection of lieder "Elegie op.36." On this recording, his work is brilliantly interpreted by bass soloist Peter Lagger and the Camerata Zurich Orchestra under the direction of conductor Rato Tschupp. Born in Brunnen, Switzerland in 1886, Schoeck's leider follow the traditions of Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Cornelius, Franz, Liszt, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Strauss, and Pfitzner. The imminent musicologist Willi Schuh once wrote, "He who has immersed himself in Othmar Schoeck's music can only speak of it as one deeply stirred, totally fulfilled."
