Review

Mathieu was born in Avignon, not far from its storied bridge, and made her singing debut when she was only 16. As she arrived on the musical scene not long after the death of Edith Piaf, there was a natural tendency to welcome her as a virtual reincarnation of the much regretted Piaf. In reality, of course, Mathieu's vocal resources were quite different, and when she matured as an artist these differences became more pronounced. In contrast to the street waif appeal of Piaf, Mathieu evolved a very robust approach, which incorporated some of Ethel Merman's fabulous projection. She also branched out in other directions, appealing to the wider European audiences of the late 20th century, in Germany for example, and, on this disc, Greece. Clearly influenced by Nana Mouskouri, Mathieu has developed a very cosmopolitan repertoire, which now extends from the Mediterranean to the Baltic. --Edward KillhamCompilation of her Greatest Hits. 15 Songs featuring Mille Colombes, Santa Maria De La Mar, Acropolis Adieu and Others.
