Review

After the 1960s' folk revival affirmed the longevity of traditional bluegrass, veterans such as Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, and the Osborne Brothers returned to the studio in the 1970s to reproduce their original sound. Wiseman recorded these 22 songs for Vetco in the mid-1970s, including 16 remakes of his 1950s Dot recordings. Several distinguishing factors give Wiseman his unique appeal. Rather than poring over the songbooks of Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers, Wiseman reaches further back for his material: British folk, old-time, and early country artists such as the Delmores and the Carters. There are no harmony vocals, allowing Wiseman's delightful tenor to work its magic. Possessing the loveliest voice of all the bluegrass singers, Wiseman sounds more like an Irish crooner than a mountain wailer. --Marc Greilsamer
