Review

The tumbling drums, staccato guitar fuzz, and hypnotic marimba of opener "I'm the Moon" make clear that Lynn Miles isn't about to be satisfied with decorous acoustic conventions or rote Americana. Her fourth album shifts gracefully across summery guitar pop, stately piano ballads, and creaky banjo dirges while remaining grounded in songs that, though suffused with disillusion and loss, always reveal "the pull of the human heart." With her lightly scratched, winsome voice, Miles can make you believe that Dorothy is more than a Hollywood cutout, that a dead-end town can still yield poetry, and that "sad songs matter most." Unravel may be Miles's most aggrieved, melancholy work; it's also her most daring and beautiful. --Roy Kasten
