Review

This CD is a very unusual offering from LOST AND FOUND. It is Just George. An idea that grew out of the question we often hear: “How can I hear more of that piano playing?” It sometimes seems like these questioners would be particularly pleased to hear Just George. And now they can. Just George makes some of our songs available in a different format than you might have heard them or thought of them before. Some listeners might find the CD quite contemplative. Others might think of it as an interesting exercise in piano playing. And some will say it is the best LOST AND FOUND CD yet since there are no jarring voices. In 1939, Aaron Copland, the American composer and pianist, wrote, in What To Think About Music, “The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, ‘Is there meaning to music?’ My answer to that would be, ‘Yes.’ And, ‘Can you state in so many words what that meaning would be?’ My answer to that would be, ‘No.’” Our hope is that you’ll find meaning in this music, though we would never ask you to state in so many words what that meaning might be. On past CD’s we’ve tried to give our music meaning by adding words. Not this time. Perhaps you will think of the lyrics to these songs as you listen. Perhaps you won’t recognize the songs, and you’ll imagine your own words, thoughts, ideas, feelings…meaning. If not meaning, perhaps you’ll find utility in this music—something to play during dinner, under conversation with friends, paired with a favored book. Piano: George Baum. Recorded by George Baum in his living room. All songs © LOST AND FOUND except Hyfrydol by Rowland H. Prichard. Check our website www.speedwood.com for lyrics and more information.
