Review

In recent years, Paris, Texas-born Leslie Satcher has distinguished herself as one of Nashville's most inspired young songwriters. Since she hit town a few years ago with $100 in her pocket and dreams of stardom, her original compositions have been covered by everyone from Reba McEntire and George Jones to Vince Gill and Randy Travis. On her fine and accomplished debut album, Satcher makes the point that perhaps nobody can interpret her memorable songs better than she can herself. On exquisitely forlorn weepers like "Burn Me Down" and "Look Who's Talking Now" (the latter featuring Alison Krauss and cowritten with the great Melba Montgomery), Satcher turns in vocal performances that are emotionally persuasive, yet understated and artful. On inward-looking songs like "Every Time It Rains," "It Can't Be Good to Hurt That Bad," and "Love Letters from Old Mexico" (where she's joined by Krauss and Emmylou Harris), Satcher reveals soulfulness and insight that seem to reach well beyond her 28 years. --Bob Allen
