Review

If you crave music to free your body from the prison of your mind, plug this set from soca outfit Krosfyah into your CD player. But this is no mindless disco sound. The band is extremely popular throughout the Caribbean, where it tours incessantly (as well as in the States and Europe), in part because Krosfyah hail not from Trinidad but from Barbados and sometimes record in Jamaica, all of which adds variety to their tropical spice. Another reason Krosfyah stand out is that their rolling soca beats are not studio manufactured but crafted by hand by a rhythm section that includes bass, steel pan, trap drums, and congas. The album is packed with profoundly erotic tunes like "Oil Pumping," unabashedly dedicated to packing the dance floor with sweating bodies by urging "hotty hotty gals" to wind their waistlines and "jump in the air." The group's fount of racy double entendres seems downright inexhaustible as lead vocalists Edwin Yearwood and Anthony Bailey trade calls to action with their background brothers and sisters' honeyed responses. --Elena Oumano
