Review

There's always warm insinuation in the sound of Kim Waters's soprano saxophone, a summoning of moonlit vistas and invitations to romance. The rhythms change from overt to understated here, and the melodies have their own individual appeal, but Waters's strength is his consistency, an ability to keep the music simple and the emotional focus clear. Whether it's a ballad or a faster tune, Waters maintains the cool propulsion of the subtlest R&B, masterfully inflecting his every phrase. Meli'sa Morgan's sultry voice makes the soul classic "Am I the Same Girl" a gem, and Chuck Loeb's guitar shines on the two tunes that he co-composed and produced, "Secrets Told" and "Up All Night." --Adam Rains
