Review

For this release, composer and keyboardist Kevin Kendle conjures eight instrumental songs dedicated to different Flowers. His piano playing is always understated and serene, and he likes to color his songs with oboe, flute, and harp. Some of these relaxing compositions openly embrace New Age platitudes. Others are more memorable, notably the shimmering "Jasmine" and the graceful "Sunflowers," both tunes filled with gentling rippling harp and ambient keyboards, the latter unexpectedly ending with an uplifting crescendo. Likewise, "Winter Jasmine" closes the album in a trance-inducing mode that recalls vintage Hearts of Space music. While Flowers maintains a consistent flow throughout its hourlong running time, Kendle could have taken more chances, but he occasionally transcends convention to produce pleasingly peaceful instrumentals. --Bryan Reesman
