Review

The personal and the universal mix in the songs of Judith Edelman like arrivals and departures at an airport. The New York City-born singer/songwriter opens her second album with the title track, a guarded meditation on the complexities of love ("I used to spin around myself, I would spin/Now I'm revolving around him"). Soon enough, however, she's exploring the perspectives of children awaiting their murderous father's return from prison ("Coming Home"), a military pilot having nightmares about a past bombing target ("Midnight on the Water"), and a housewife whose life is so grim she idolizes librarians ("Library Card"). Frisky new-grass arrangements propel the tunes, bracing Edelman's lissome vocals and canny lyrics. Only Sun is the work of an artist just beginning to harness her abundant talents. --Steven Stolder
