Review

Kismet is a landmark label debut from seasoned Portland singer/songwriter John Larsen. A departure from traditional indie rock and singer/songwriter structures and styles, blending punk, indie, emo, pop, blues, electronica, paired with his patented cryptic, emotive lyrics. Though mixed and mastered in professional studios, Larsen has maintained his lo-fi, DIY dynamic in his songs, in which he creates a warm sound replete with experimental shifts and nomadic rhythms. Larsen himself describes his process of songwriting as "creating and then systematically destroying" the tracks; this comes through in Kismet, peppered with allusions to this process as well as tributes to his varied influences.
