Review
If Cripplin' Crutch sounds reminiscent of the title of a certain well-known song by the Band, it should come as no surprise that Flood in fact contributed a tune ("Move to Japan") to the Band's 1993 effort, Jericho. Neither is it surprising therefore that Flood and his music are very closely related to that Woodstock-by-way-of-the-Deep-South sound, a mixture of folk, blues, and good-natured New Orleans barrelhouse. In 2001 we call that type of thing Americana, but whatever one labels it, it's a funny, mildly bitter mix, raucous and rolling and slightly psychedelic, charming and more than a little odd. Flood is a one-man master of an art form that few remember, but which is no less effective or entertaining. --Henry Cabot Beck
