Review

It was only a matter of time before Iroquois singer Joanne Shenandoah was seduced by the lure of electronica. Often based around chant, her music would seem to lend itself to the designs of producer Jim Wilson. Part Choctaw Indian, he's worked with Robbie Robertson, produced albums by Walela, and recorded ethno-techno with Tulku and Native electronica with Little Wolf. But his take on electronica has always sounded second hand and mechanical. Even the live cellist comes off like a bad sample. Shenandoah's previous producer, Tom Wasinger, brought a supple understatement to her music, framing her powerful voice in meticulously-textured arrangements of global-Native chamber music. But on Covenant, Shenandoah becomes a side musician on her own recording, her multi-tracked voice reduced to an exotic flavor. Instead of the chilled-Native sound they were looking for, Covenant is simply defrosted. --John DilibertoPrayers for the Dance Floor of Your Heart...

Joanne Shenandoah was a Grammy Nominee for her recording "Peacemaker's Journey in 2000."

These songs honor the Covenant between humankind and the earth with riveting music that masterfully weaves original compositions and powerful messages from the ancient Iroquois prophecy. On this progressive recording Shenandoah's enchanting voice is backed with percussive grooves, vivid string arrangements, and tribal sounds in a modern style that ranges from dance to trance.

"Believe me: this woman has power. You can hear it, feel it in her voice: lilting, buoyant... the steady whisper of a clear, cool stream that wears down a once-tall, proud speckled mountain; truth." -Global Rhythm Magazine

"Our music is healing, eternal and earth conscious. Our songs celebrate our survival and have a deep spiritual essence which will resonate around a world which needs Native music." -JOANNE SHENANDOAH
