Review

British Columbia's Jill Paquette's self-titled debut is as warm and inviting as it is refreshing, particularly when the young French Canadian singer-songwriter calls upon her Native American ancestry to spin up lyrical imagery that so aptly captures the intimacy between created and creator. And while acoustic guitar and piano weave Paquette's musical tapestry, she is much more than your typical, cookie-cutter folkie. Paquette ratchets up the rock on such tracks as "Not The Only One" or "Forget," drawing comparisons to Sheryl Crow with their roots-rock sound. Paquette's guitar prowess shines bright on "There to Here," as does her ear for the melodic chorus on "Lift My Eyes" and "So Close," both of which are reminiscent of Nichole Nordeman and Jennifer Knapp. Credit for this beautiful-sounding debut should also go to production group of Eldon Winter, Stephen J. Rendall, and Phil Madeira, who build the album around Paquette's songwriting skills. --Michael Lyttle
