Review
Smooth and sophisticated, Jerry Gonzalez' latest CD is an intriguing masterwork. Anchored by Gonzalez, who is a wizard on percussion and is obviously inspired by Miles Davis in his trumpet playing, the music evokes an international speakeasy. An intimate club setting where fiery flamenco grooves, bebop-flavored jazz, and reflective tunes are showcased. Gonzalez is matched in his intensity by flamenco guitarist Nino Josele on such tunes as Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Dream" ("Monk Soniquete") and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" ("Donnali"). While the musicianship is exquisite, Spanish flamenco singer Diego El Cigala adds a haunting vibe on "Gitanos de la Cava" and "Obsesion." He sings in a bluesy and dramatic style, his light tenor zooming from barely audible whispers to tortured wails. --Ramiro Burr
