Review

Jeb Loy Nichols is one downright considerate artist: on the last track of this, his second solo album, the former Fellow Travellers bandleader goes so far as to thank the technical folk and all the artists who played on the record. And rightly so: the best moments here are when Nichols gets a little help from his friends, who liven up the vocal arrangements on the infectious choruses to "Heaven Right Here," "Kissing Gate," and "Midnight (All Night Long)." Tricky bassist Wayne Nunes and reggae mixer Stephen Stanley also underscore the proceedings with subtle grooves, but it's Nichols's laconic singing and songwriting that take center stage on this scaled-down follow-up to his 1997 Lovers Knot. Raised on American roots music in Wyoming and Missouri, Nichols once shared a house in London with Neneh Cherry, avant dubmaster Adrian Sherwood, and Ari Upp of the Slits.
