Format: CDThe best flamenco guitarists tend to hail from Spain. But this Texas virtuoso is an amazing exception. Not since Al Di Meola has an American so completely mastered this ancient Andalusian art. On his debut disc, the fleet-fingered, McGuire is backed by percussionists and vocalists who perform the infectious palmas handclaps, along with Santana bassist Barry Rietveld, and vocalist Jose Manuel Blanco "El Grillo." The CD delivers a dancing and delightful program that showcases all of the inventions and dimensions of the genre. "Lagrimas de Sol" ("Tears of the Sun)" is laced with hypnotizing colombianas. "Rachel Camela" swings in the maze-like alegrias, and the title track features violin accompaniment interlocking with zesty tangos rhythms. The most interesting selection, "Aires de Mozambique," bounces with a slight Afro-Cuban edge. McGuire plays with a precision and passion that moves the music from the heat of the Spanish sun into the deepest heart of Texas. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
