Review

The band of famous guitarist Toshio EGAWA (NOVELA, SHEHERAZADE, EARTHSHAKER…), GERARD performs an elegant, elaborated symphonic music that takes its roots in the golden Progressive rock of YES, GENESIS and company. A blend of sensitivity, precious lyricism and power are heard in the first albums of that quartet. The eponymous album issued in 1983 was at the top of this remarkable Japanese progressive scene, when it was just starting. GERARD's fame was confirmed with "Empty Lie, Empty Dream" in 1987, and consolidated with "Irony Of Fate" four years later. The omnipresent virtuoso and majestic keyboards became the rule since co-founder Yukihiro FUJIMURA left the band, he who would be the author of VIENNA's fabulous and aggressive guitar parts. "Save Knight By The Night" was initially issued in 1994 under the assumed name of Toshio EGAWA'S GERARD, and constituted a precursor of the current power trio that started with "The Pendulum" in 1996 and that went on with "Pandora's Box" the following year. Virtuoso, sophisticated and bubbly, the instrumental line-up, sometimes helped by the Canadian singer Robin SUCHY, performs a series of "epic" tracks in the style of the second UK album. The mini-CD "Evidence Of True Love" and "Meridian" (Older tracks from the first period and in majority revisited) follow the Progressive rock style dominated by the keyboards which saturate the sound spectrum. The lavish and powerful model developed by EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER appear to be, in some occasions, the works of some nice lullaby singers for nice kids !!! "Live in Marseille - Battle's Triangle" gives a good example of the powerful music created by GERARD, a guest for the French year in Japan in July 1998 (ECLAT did the same trip, but in the other direction, i.e. to Tokyo…). In 2000 & 2002, "The Ruins Of A Glass Fortress" & "Sighs Of The Water" follow the same path. The maturity is here, but relatively less flashy. Indeed, generally speaking, the power shown blend with a virtuosity and mastery worth of the greatest power-organ trios. The over-powerful bass with some guitar accents as well as fascinating drums probably played by ten hands (…) contribute in giving to this music an impact and a power usually reserved to the best hard rock bands ! This is the reason why this music doesn't admit comparisons, first because it is unique and then because they just share with Eddie JOBSON & John WETTON a certain exuberance and diversity, both harmoniously and melodically, and make these albums must-have!
