Review

Two and a half years after getting a critical drubbing for their debut, Leisure Noise, Gay Dad emerge as a sleeker animal by eliminating much of their prog-rock posturing and filtering Cliff Jones's brainy stream-of-consciousness lyrics and psychedelic sensibilities through authentic rock rhythms. Kicking off with the anthemic "Transmission," the album takes listeners on a roller coaster ride through the garage-inspired landscape of "Now Always and Forever" to the disturbing and steamy underworld of "Nightclub," a place where David Bowie and Iggy Pop would have hung out during their Berlin years. Then there's the tense interplay of irony and innocence in "Dinosaur," seemingly an autobiographical rendering of the band's fall from grace. If there is justice in the world, Transmission will allow Gay Dad to overcome the hype that hamstrung them the first time around and gain the recognition they so deserve. --Jaan Uhelszki
