Review

The title echoes an impatient reggae public that's been waiting for this album since '91, when this promising young deejay was picked up by Dave Kelly's Madhouse label. The magnetic Frisco's up front and center delivering on his promise, but, as is the case with any Kelly production, the real star here is the gifted behind-the-scenes producer-songwriter who's Jamaica's leading groove maker. Kelly's Midas touch is the reason why Frisco and the other artists in the Kelly camp can count their hits before they hatch. The "Joyride" compilation, '97's reggae obsession featuring Frisco, Wayne Wonder, Spragga Benz, and others taking their best shots on Kelly's addictive "joyride" riddim, illustrates his genius for building tracks that define Jamaican hip-hop, a.k.a. reggae dancehall, and Frisco's agile performance in this set proves Kelly's also a patient and effective coach. Rising to the challenge here to booty-provoking tracks with (Kelly-scripted) tunes like "Little and Cute" and "Rubbers"--a winner even among the many smash singles that the "joyride" produced--Frisco makes a convincing bid for fame beyond the reggae massive. --Elena Oumano
