Review

Tenor saxophonist and composer Fred Hess's past musical associations fairly describe his own musical outlets. He attended the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York, in the late '70s, and has worked with artists as sympathetically diverse as Charlie Haden, Leo Smith, Ron Miles, Ray Brown, Wynton Marsalis, and Ginger Baker. A professor in Denver, he's an extremely active performer in the area, also attracting well-deserved accolades from further afield. This quartet session finds some well-matched players moving from the semi-comical hijinks of "Mr. & Mrs. Clef Take a Vacation" to the fractured post-bop of the title tune to the quiet bearing of the elegy-like "Boson." Throughout, the musicians celebrate the 1960s-era free-form playing that spilled forth in the wake of Ornette Coleman and others who boldly broke jazz molds from the '50s onward. Unobtrusively produced, the set captures their interplay with the warmth of a studio and the visceral edge of a live performance. --David GreenbergerExtended Family is flawlessly executed--seamless, quirky, angular, sometimes whimsical stuff ("Mr. and Mrs. Clef Take a Vacation", a sonic story that involves alien abduction) featuring players with a depth of musical knowledge and serious chops.
