Review

Vintage Red is the 2006 album from Canadian Independent Music Award winners Fidgital, showing off the band as one incredible unit like never before. Coming off the tours in support of their 2004 album “Condo Life” and the subsequent 2005 “Renovations” remix collection, Fidgital endeavoured to make this album show off the intensity and musicianship their live fans love. The 10 songs and 4 “interval” pieces tell a moving story of seduction, betrayal, and ultimate redemption. The whole story clocks in just under 45 minutes, allowing listeners to get through the story in one sitting. For the iPod generation, each song is self-contained, and can be enjoyed without the continuity of the songs around it. But for those who take the time to enjoy the story through the detailed booklet and gorgeous artwork accompanying each piece, the rewards will be much greater. Anybody could point to influences which have impacted this record (broken beat, hip hop, heavy metal, classic funk, big band jazz, Bollywood soundtracks, etc.), but what’s more important is that anybody who listens to it recognizes that Fidgital is a band with a strong and completely unique sound. Accessible and adventurous, Fidgital comes from the underground but with enough pop appeal to reach larger audiences. Singles: “You Got It Goin’ On” is a very hooky song of attraction and obsession, marrying an incredible soulful vocal performance to live nu-funk with a James Brown influence. “My Life As A Million Billionaire” is riotous tour of Fidgital’s over-the-top lifestyle, with outrageous, catchy lyrics and constant surprises. “Kill Me Don’t Kill Me” is fun and playful song about depression, anger and self destruction! “True Ambition” opens the album with an unbelievable manifesto of what Fidgital is capable of, infectiously mixing big band jazz with electro funk and heavy metal vocal stylings.
