Review

This spirited honky tonker left Capitol Records for Mercury in 1962, a decade of essential country music already under his belt. His 15-year association with Mercury never reached the heights of his Capitol period, but it was certainly fruitful enough to earn this short, 11-song collection. With hints of countrypolitan affecting his core honky tonk, these cuts are more polished than his earlier work, although they're raw compared with much of the countrypolitan of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A few serviceable remakes of his Capitol hits accompany quality additions to Young's body of work, including "Wine Me Up," "Keeping Up with the Joneses," and "It's Four in the Morning," which was CMA's 1972 Single of the Year. He also offers fine readings of Kris Kristofferson's "Your Time's Comin'" and Tom T. Hall's "If I Ever Fall in Love (With a Honky Tonk Girl)." --Marc Greilsamer
