Review

As a young man, Jamaica's Everton Williams performed as a reggae singer under the name Bubbaru, but by the mid-1980s, frustrated by his lack of success, he quit the music business. In 1990, however, he converted to the Rastafarian religion and decided to give music one more try. The now 42-year-old Williams had grown up with the soul-flavored, politically outspoken roots reggae of Bob Marley. He mixed old-fashioned singing with newfangled rhythm tracks so effectively that he adopted the stage name of Everton Blender. Piece of the Blender comprises 13 uncollected songs recorded both before and after his return. Blender is only a so-so songwriter, but he possesses a strong, sweet tenor voice that can accommodate both the percussive accents of toasting and the melodic flow of roots reggae. --Geoffrey Himes
