Review

The daughter of the Who's guitarist has a real gift. Her lyrics are economical, hard-edged portraits of fascinating characters--a woman who longs for a country house so she can indulge her jealousy without disruption, a convalescing patient who daydreams of being healthy, a circus acrobat who ponders both freedom and confinement at the top of the ladder. And Townshend's hushed, knowing soprano stretches and twists the words to make them yield their ironies. She doesn't make it easy for listeners to enter these stories, however. Her melodies are minimalist; her tempos are glacial; her arrangements are little but voice and piano. The results resemble Joni Mitchell's substantial but forbidding albums of the late '70s. --Geoffrey Himes
