Review

By 1966, Dusty Springfield was moving closer to the middle of the road, adding Italian pop bombast (this album's fabulous title smash) and the occasional Broadway showstopper ("Who Can I Turn To?") to her repertoire. For most of the disc, however, she relied less on the sheer vocal power those songs demanded and more on the subtle inflections she'd internalized through her study of American soul singers. Strong to stunning versions of songs by Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Randy Newman, and then-Zombie Rod Argent help make this one of her best albums of the period--despite the presence of a "La Bamba" that epitomizes the phrase "out of place." --Rickey Wright
