Review

Originally released in 1991 on the Aura label, this was only Dick Heckstall-Smith's second solo album despite him having spent over 35 years in the music business.

Woza Nasu, as its Zulu originated name suggests, betrays African influences. It was amazing that after so long in the business, this was Dick's first instrumental jazz album. Like much of Dick's work, the album came in for much critical acclaim and on it he is joined by Alan Weeks on guitar, bassist Ike Leo, on keyboards, Dick's colleague from Mainsqueeze, Dave 'Munch' Moore and Pete Brown (who not only co-produced the album and played percussion on some tracks, but also funded the recording). The album was re-released on Mainstream as Where One Is, but it is now issued with a track originally left of the first release. Isa's, a previously unreleased song over seven minutes long was recorded at the same time as the rest of the album.

Now that Woza Nasu is finally available in it's complete form, this vibrant life enhancing music should come to the attention of many people, both jazz/blues enthusiasts and fans of good music generally.2002 reissue of the saxophonist's second solo album, originally released in 1991, includes one previously unreleased bonus track, 'Isa's'. Heckstall-Smith's a legendary figure in jazz, blues & rock, having played alongside Jack Bruce, Ginger Maker, Graham Bond, Alexis Korner, Jon Hiseman, John Mayall, & Davey Graham.
