Review

Tapping into varied influences, Red Afternoon displays the range of Deidre’s lyrical and vocal craft. It explores themes of fate, heroism, love, and loss with vocal treatments that bring to mind the rich warmth of Karen Carpenter and the agility of Ella Fitzgerald, while her songwriting builds on the legacy of artists such as Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley. Produced by brother Derek Muro, alt-rock cuts are scattered throughout more folk and jazz influenced numbers. Red Afternoon is an album about necessary transition. Rather than react with the typical girl-rock rage that characterizes so many of today’s female voices, Deidre asks her audience to meditate on the complicated experiences that shape our lives. On the album’s bluesy title track, Muro sings with the mystique of a ‘40s crooner, “After the sun sets on this red afternoon, I won’t be hearing from you,” ultimately accepting her own realities and the necessity to move forward.
